A Small Harvest Monday For October 3rd, 2011.

The harvests continue to dwindle down, but, we have to expect that this time of year. I just have a few veggies to report on this week.

My trusty giant marconi peppers were still producing this past week with seven peppers that weighed 7 ounces. If the weather warms back up a bit, they might produce a few more nice peppers.

I was able to get one Park's Whopper tomato this week and it weighed 6 1/2 ounces. Many more green ones still on the vines, but boy are they turning slowly!

The Cherokee Purples gave me three tomatoes that weighed a total of eleven ounces.

The okra slowed down its production as well. I only got 4 okra that weighed 2 1/4 ounces.

The raspberries maintained their production with 2 ounces for this week.

This week's harvest brings the total weight to 294 pounds for the calendar year. Quite a bit lower than last year's records. I can't believe I didn't get a single cucumber this year. That's unthinkable! I'm still grateful for what we did get.

Hopefully next year will be better. I still have my cool weather crops that I'm hoping will produce some nice harvests during this fall and early winter.

  1. Weather conditions have such an effect on vegetable production! You never know in advance how the weather will turn out, so I tend to "hedge my bets" by sowing/planting lots of different crops. When one fails or under-performs, another is likely to do well.

  2. It was definitely a bad year for cucumbers...and some other veggies too! Next year has got to be better!

At least you still have some fresh veggies to enjoy and others to look forward to!

    Enjoy!

  3. I just barely managed to get enough cucumbers to make a batch of dill pickle relish and some refrigerator dills - but we had literally none for fresh eating so far. There are still some cucumbers on the vine but the plants are going down with powdery mildew so it is questionable whether we get to enjoy any of them.

Been a very cool year for us and our harvest totals are almost half of a more bountiful year typically produces. We have enough to keep us fed for the year though and lots of fall crops growing that will provide fresh fare to supplement the preserved.

    Those Marconi peppers are gorgeous.

  4. Mark Willis, You're right about the weather! I'm still developing my skills at what I plant being the best bang for the buck for the space used for specific periods of time. Value Space Rating (VSR) I think we called it. It was better this year than last year already, even with no cucumbers.

Robin, Part of my problem may be that I got a late start this year as I was three weeks late getting my plants in. I'm looking at another nice harvest of those marconi's already! Maybe with the coming weather to be in the mid 70's for 8 or 9 days will be inspirational for additional growth.

kitsapFG, I hope you are able to harvest a few more of your cucs! My totals are way down too. Thank goodness for the fall crops!

Ruth@VS, Hopefully next year will be a better year for all of our harvests. Seems like everyone is having a little more trouble than usual with their gardens. I want to try planting garlic next year. We love garlic on just about everything.

Thanks to everyone for stopping by and for sharing a comment.

Have a great vegetable gardening day!
