Harvest Monday 20 December 2010.

We're almost to the end of the calendar year, which means this is close to the last harvest for the year. I will be picking collards for Christmas dinner this week, so I still have that to look forward to. Slim pickin's this week!

Here are the last of the leeks for this year. They weighed in at 12 ounces. I'll take these and the carrots with some other vegetables and make some homemade vegetable soup.

Here are the last of the carrots. I had to bring the container into the house for it to thaw some so I could pull the carrots without damaging them.

This is what the carrots looked like cleaned up. They weighed 9 ounces. Better than nothing, as they taste pretty good. Nice and sweet!

That does it for another Harvest Monday from my organic vegetable garden.

Thanks for visiting!

  1. I find it rather amusing that you had to thaw the container to harvest your carrots, boy am I lucky to be a zone 9 gardener. It's amazing what conditions living vegetables can tolerate.

  2. Homemade vegetable soup sounds so good on cold days like these...especially with veggies from the garden. I have been holding off harvesting my leeks. I think that I may just try after Christmas for a final harvest of the year.

  3. So, did you admit to your friends that you had been eating "frozen carrots"?? My only remaining root veg are parsnips, and they are certainly frozen-in at present. The leeks look good - crying out for some Bechamel sauce maybe??

  4. They may be slim pickings, but better than mine this week. My ground is frozen solid and I can't bring my garden in to thaw it out. Which is really too bad. Though to be honest I don't need the ground thawed. I need the plants thawed. The greens don't pick well if they are frozen.

  5. I am down to the small sized carrots too at this point but they are sure sweet after being in the really cold ground for a spell. Your leeks look yummy!

  6. Michelle, I thought I was lucky to be a Zone 8a gardener, but look at it. It feels like Siberia outside! Hopefully, the weather will come back to normal soon. You're right about living vegetables tolerating a lot. But then, isn't it strange how some are so difficult to grow?

Robin, Yeah! Homemade soup does sound really good in this weather!

Mark Willis, Ha! Ha! At least I could call them "fresh frozen".

Daphne, You're right about the greens. My chard looks like something I've never seen before. It looks almost like it melted. Gooey-looking.

kitsapFG, The carrots ARE sweet and the leeks smelled very good when I was cleaning them up. They'll be a great addition to the soup.

Thanks to each of you for visiting and sharing your comments! Stay warm and have a Happy Holiday!

  11. Not sure if you have leeks left, but here is the frittata recipe that our grammie used. It has leeks in it and it's wonderful!
