Harvest Monday for February 27th, 2012.

With the mild winter almost being over, there's still more broccoli for the freezer from this week's harvest!

This week we picked four pounds nine ounces of crisp, fresh organic broccoli! It may be the last harvest for these plants though, given the warm 82 degree weather we had for a day or two.

That warm weather is all the plants needed to start thinking about bolting and going to seed. The weather has cooled back off into the mid-50's, but it may be too late for another picking. Right now, these are the only flowers I see on any of my plants, so the others might still produce. We'll just have to wait and see.

It won't be long and I'll be pulling them anyway in order to plant the spring garden. The broccoli was very good while it lasted as the total harvested was 20.38 pounds!

Be sure to visit DaphnesDandelions for more exciting vegetable gardening experiences in a northern growing zone.

Thanks for stopping by and visiting my blog!

Have a great vegetable gardening day!

  1. Beautiful broccoli. I only dream of harvesting that much. I love it but it is such an unproductive plant for me.

    1. Thanks! It's kind of strange that I hope for easy winter weather and get it and then it turns too warm and causes the plants to start to bolt. I'll be pulling all my broccoli this weekend.

  2. Im looking forward to planting lots of broccoli soon...Im putting away my bean glut at the moment, we are winding down the Summer garden, waiting for the capsicums to finish and the eggplants and beans and that will be it for the hot weather veg....and it all starts again.......

    1. I think that next year I will plant my broccoli a couple of weeks sooner than this past year. I think that might have increased the harvest somewhat. "...and it all starts again..." that's the good part. No matter what, we never quit. We all know where the good food comes from, and it's not the store!

  4. what a great harvest! My broccoli is not making large heads this year, just tiny shoots so I eat them leaves stems and all and they are just as good.

    1. I have only had two or three large heads from mine. All the rest were florets, but I think they are actually more tender and flavorful and I like them better.

    1. Thanks! They were very tender. So good to eat right in the garden. Sweeter than store bought for sure!

  6. You really did have a great run of broccoli from that planting. One of my favorite veggies so I appreciate the bounty you got from it.

  7. I am glad I found your blog. I am also into backyard organic fruits/vegetables gardening, but I am new into all these; started since last year and thus have a lot to learn from you.

    1. I'm glad you found it too! Other people have shared their information with me, in addition to what I learned as a kid growing up with my mom's vegetable gardens. That's how I learned, so I like to pass it on. I hope my blog does that. One of the most important things I think that I do for my garden is making my own compost. It really helps the soil, and consequently, the plants.

  8. That's an amazing broccoli harvest! I sure hope that I have a better broccoli harvest this year. Last year it was a failure due to the unseasonable early heat waves we had.

    1. Thanks! The heat really throws it all out of whack! Good luck with it and all your plots this year! You are really committed. That's great!
