Harvest Monday for January 23rd, 2012.

This week's harvest is as productive as I hoped it would be when I was planning for it. I wanted to be able to get a little bit of broccoli each week during most of the winter. So far, it's been working that way. I know in February when it is the coldest time here, the growth will probably stop and then pick back up in March.

Although small in quantity, it is still nice to get fresh vegetables from my garden in January. Next year will see an additional two rows of broccoli to ensure the desired harvest is met... as long as Mother Nature cooperates.

The broccoli produced a 15 ounce harvest for this week. Recently our daytime weather temps are running between low 50's to mid 60's, and I'm very grateful for it.

I also picked 12 ounces of buttercrunch lettuce as part of this week's harvest. I'm going to try using this in a green smoothie along with some other ingredients and see how it tastes.

That's all the garden news for this week's report.

Thanks for stopping by to see how things are going in the garden during this time of year.

Have a great vegetable gardening day!

  1. Good luck with the Lettuce smoothie! I have to say that I doubt whether it will be nice, but I look forward to hearing your verdict.

    1. The lettuce smoothie wasn't nice the way I made it. It needed more ingredients for some taste!

  3. I think that green smoothies are totally not about the taste, but about the knowing how many vitamins you just tortured yourself with :)

  4. Your lettuce look beautiful - exactly like the variety I keep trying to buy but I end up with something else entirely when i sow the seeds (internet seed shopping - without pictures). I will have to see if buttercrunch is available here.

    1. Thank you. I got the little plants in those three-in-a-pack plastic containers at the feed-n-seed store.

  7. Your harvest looks great. We are hoping for a lot more broccoli this year as well. Unfortunately we can't over winter it in our garden, just too cold.

    A lettuce smoothie . . . I don't know??? :)

    1. Thanks! Good luck with your crop this year.
A lettuce smoothie is good if you have all the ingredients. Maybe I just tell myself it is good because it is good for me!

    1. It actually tastes even better than it looks! It seems to be pretty cold hearty. We've had a few nights below freezing and they weren't bothered too much. Some yellowing around the very edges. That's all.

  10. Nice looking broccoli; mine will be late this year, hoping to be earlier next time. Lovely lettuce. I've been doing cut and come again instead of letting them go to heads but I might do a few heads in the future.
