Mid-Year Garden Tally.

I thought I would do something different with this posting since my recent posts have been tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes. I thought I would do a tally of what I have harvested from my garden this calendar year. Several vegetables continued to grow into springtime from last fall's plantings, so to keep track of all of it, my spreadsheet data goes from January 1st to December 31st of each year. Expenditures come out of the value of the crops for each year. I don't carry expenses from year to year. That makes it too much like work, and for me that takes the fun out of the whole experience.

Vegetable or Fruit Item                 Pounds
Willow Leaf Lima Beans                 20.31
Blueberries                                         5.02

Park's Whopper Tomatoes          135.36
Fortex Green Beans                       70.13

Rainbow Swiss Chard                     4.94

Total Pounds Thus Far               584.43

In my next post, I'll have some pics of the current harvests at that time. The last two or three weeks have been hectic here, leaving me no time to post my harvests. I apologize for that, as I am humbled by your visits to my blog.

I hope everyone gets some rain for their gardens and you have wonderful harvests!

Have a great vegetable gardening day!

  1. That is a lot of veggies. I always love to look at theses kinds of totals. It really shows you what people like eating.

    1. Tracking the totals really helps a person decide what they should plant for the next crop too. Some things work, and some don't. It's a constant learning experience.

  2. Wow! You don't mess around when it comes to tomatoes. How many plants did you put in? You also have some amazing bean and collards poundage!

    1. Thanks! I have 67 tomato plants. The heat is taking some of them as I type this though. It seems like we've had more days over 100 degrees already this year than I can remember from previous years. That is really taking a toll on the garden, even though I have a well for it!
I love the Fortex green beans! Absolutely stringless and delicious! It's time for me to get the ground ready for my fall crops to get planted in the next 2 or 3 weeks. Collards will be on that list again, as will Brussels sprouts, lettuce, broccoli and some others.

    1. Thanks! It is a lot of tomatoes, but I would welcome more! I'm still wanting to come up with a thicker sauce for canning purposes. I'm pondering using glass containers like pitchers and letting the tomato puree sit in the fridge for a couple of days. When it separates I will be able to see it through the glass, and then use a turkey baster or something to pull out the liquid before I start cooking it down. There has to be a better way that takes fewer hours of cooking and stirring.

  4. I planted my pole beans May 31. I'm still waiting. How tall are your pole bean trestles? I planted at least 8 cucumber plants and they have now stopped producing since we had that week of 100 degrees plus weather. I picked 2 puny cukes today. I hope tomorrow is a better day. I still love my garden . We all have issues.

    1. I planted my pole beans on March 20th because we had that very warm weather. Even the overnight soil temp was over 60 degrees! The vines are all dried now, and I have the last beans in a 5 gallon bucket where I broke up the bean pods using a 2x4 like I was churning butter. Now I have to winnow the mixture so I can retrieve the beans for next year's crop planting. The beans I had this year were from the seeds I saved last year. I'm now a confirmed seed saver!
My trestles (fencing) are about 4 feet 9 inches high. That's 4 feet for the fence fabric, and 9 inches of clearance under it.
I planted a 25 foot row of cukes twice this year, and still don't have a single cuke. They get about an inch long, turn yellow, and fall off. Last year, I planted cukes 5 times with none to harvest. That was using seeds and transplants. I don't know what's going on with them. You're right! I love my garden too! I sincerely hope more and more people get the desire to have one, regardless of size.
